PORT-AU-PRINCE — Speculation mounted Tuesday that Haitian singer Wyclef Jean will officially announce his candidacy Thursday for president of the Western Hemisphere’s most embattled country.
CNN announced that Jean, who was born in Haiti but has lived much of his life in the United States, will appear Nike Dunk Thursday night on Larry King Live to discuss his plans. The Associated Press quoted former legislator Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques as saying that the hip-hop superstar will run as part of Jean-Jacques’ “together we are strong” coalition.
The reports are the latest to point toward a run for the former Fugees star. The Miami Herald reported Friday that Jean officially announced his intentions in a series of meetings, and that his lawyers were working on his paperwork.
“It’s a huge decision,” Jean told The Herald last week about the prospect of his running. “The decision is not final.”
From the dining tables of Pétionville to the camps of Port-au-Prince, the candidacy of Jean has been the topic of intense discussion in recent weeks. Many wonder whether he is eligible to run, is qualified or merely trying to promote his new album.
Jean, 37, represents a departure from the status quo of the current government led by President René Préval.
“Wyclef has many people following him, and this could be a great opportunity for Haiti,” said Kevin Luma, 19, a student. “Maybe because he loves Haitians so much, he loves Haiti so much, things can change — even if not 100 percent.”
For others, he draws comparisons to former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide — but only so far. Aristide, a priest-turned-president ousted in 2004, enjoyed popular support but also fomented class hatred.
“I believe, like Aristide he will carry a groundswell because of his youth, because of his success, because of the hope he represents,” said Georges Sassine, a Haitian businessman and president of the Cheap Dunk Shoes Haitian Industrialists Association. “But unlike Aristide, this is a man who knows how things work, having lived in the United States. . . . Most important, I do not detect any envy or hatred from him and this is most encouraging.”
Jean’s uncle, Haiti Ambassador to the U.S. Raymond Joseph, will also be a candidate. He reportedly sent his resignation to Préval early last week.
Jean and Joseph will be part of a crowded field as candidates begin to signal their intentions. The one-week filing period ends on Saturday. Sources say that Jean plans to register his candidacy on Thursday before his appearance on Larry King.
A nine-member electoral council will determine who is qualified to run under Haitian law. Jean would have to prove to the council’s satisfaction that he has lived in Haiti for five consecutive years, that he holds only Haitian citizenship and that he owns land here.
In the last presidential election, in 2006, Haitian authorities blocked the candidacy of Texas millionaire Dumarsais Siméus, noting that the constitution bars a U.S. citizen from holding dual citizenship, which rendered him ineligible.
Whoever wins the Nov. 28 election will inherit one of the toughest jobs in the region. The country is barely recovering from the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake that claimed a government Nike Men Dunk High estimated 300,000 lives and left much of Port-au-Prince in ruin. More than a million people remain displaced, and much of the billions in aid promised by donors have still to arrive.
Jean has been one of the most recognizable voices calling on the international community to help Haitians. His Yéle Haiti Foundation has raised millions, some from text donations shortly after the earthquake. The charity has come under scrutiny over how it spends the funds donated to it on behalf of Haiti.

August 4th, 2010 by jiayou1224Tibetan radicals want India to “historical” independence of Tibet
July 11th, 2010 by jiayou1224While Foreign Secretary Nirupma Rao’s meeting with Tibet’s exiled leader the Dalai Lama has stirred speculations of all Nike Air Jordan sorts, pro-Independence Tibetan hardliners asked India to review its policy towards the Chinese administered – Tibetan Autonomous Region. A group of young Tibetan radicals met Foreign
Secretary Nirupma Rao at Mcleodganj to deliver memorandum seeking reviewal of India’s decade old policy towards Tibet.
In the memorandum, the group of young Tibetans demanded India to recognize the “historical” independence of Tibet for solving its long pending border disputes with China. “We are also aware that Indian government still holds its decade old policy on Tibet saying TAR is part of People Republic of China and that has not been reviewed all this time while there is mounting military, political and environmental pressure towards India” said poet and Tibetan activist, Tenzing Tsundue, who accompanied the group of young exiles to submit a memorandum. “Only by recognizing historical independence of Tibet with which the Himalayan borders were decided through bilateral treaties can India validate its legal and historical claim over its Himalayan states which have been challenged time and again by PRC” read the excerpt of memorandum.
Radical Air Max Shoes leaders, disagreeing with the Dalai Lama’s middle way approach to settle the vexed Tibetan issue, stressed that they will continue their non-violent struggle for independence of Tibet. The Dalai Lama seeks greater autonomy for Chinese controlled Tibet, within the frame work of Chinese constitutions. But China has been turning down the demand saying that Tibetan leader was seeking Indepdence in guise. The nine round of talks between the Dalai Lama’s and Chinese government representatives have failed to break the ice, with China opposing Tibetan people’s memorandum for Genuine Autonomy.
In the petition signed by more than two dozen, intellectuals, an exiled youth said that only Tibet’s independence can guarantee survival of Tibetan people and their culture. The two paged memorandum claimed that people living in Tibet were tired of Chinese oppression. “The 2008 uprising in Tibet is clear mandate that the Tibetans in Tibet are willing to die but not live under Chinese colonial rule” says Tenzing Choyeing, student coordinator.
Radical leaders made it clear to the government of India that they would continue with struggle for independence of Tibet, while they expressed gratitude for supporting the exiles. “We believe that Indian government long term interest lies in stronger position vis a vis Chinese government policy” added Choeying.
Majority of the signatories comprised young Tibetan leaders who were at the fore front of anti-Chinese Women NFL Jerseys campaign ahead of Beijing Olympics in 2008 when the young exiled Tibetans started a return march to their homeland-Tibet.
Foreign secretary Nirupma Rao refused to elaborate anything about memorandum and her meeting with the Dalai Lama. “I don’t want to speak to the media” she said when approached by Hindustan Times during her visit to Norbulingka monastery, seven kilometers from the main town. Rao accompanied by Gautam Bambewale, joint secretary East Asia affairs, stayed the monastery for more than two hours before she boarded a Kingfisher’s flight to Delhi from airport in Gaggal. Rao’s maiden visit to NFL Kids Jerseys hill town comes exactly after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s special envoy, National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon met Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jia Bao in Bejing to discuss host of issues.

Russian Inmate Conflicted by Possible Deal, Backers Say
July 8th, 2010 by jiayou1224MOSCOW — Until this week, Igor V. Sutyagin was being held in a prison camp not far from the Arctic Circle, near the site of what were some of Stalin’s most infamous gulags. His MBT Shoes supporters say the location was apt, describing him as a political prisoner in Vladimir V. Putin’s Russia.
The Russian government, though, considers Mr. Sutyagin, 45, nothing more than a turncoat, a scientist who passed secrets about Russian weapons systems to the C.I.A.
After more than a decade behind bars, Mr. Sutyagin may be nearing release because he may be included in a possible prisoner exchange involving the 10 people arrested in the United States last month on charges of being part of a Russian espionage ring.
Now moved to a prison in Moscow, Mr. Sutyagin was said by his family and friends to be bewildered about the change. They said he did not want to leave in a spy swap, given that he had steadfastly denied engaging in espionage. But he feels that he has no choice.
“He basically has no other way out,” Ernst Chyorny, executive secretary of the Public Committee in Discount MBT Shoes Defense of Scientists in Moscow, said in an interview on Wednesday. “It is clear that otherwise, they will not free him under any other circumstances.”
Mr. Chyorny said Mr. Sutyagin had four years left on his sentence, but the authorities could punish him further by extending his term. He said Mr. Sutyagin had recently lost two appeals for early release.
Mr. Chyorny said that he went to the prison camp in Arkhangelsk, and that Mr. Sutyagin had not been physically or psychologically broken, despite often harsh treatment. He said Mr. Sutyagin had at times been put in solitary confinement.
Mr. Sutyagin, a former arms control researcher for the Institute for the U.S. and Canadian Studies in Moscow, was convicted in 2004 of treason and espionage for selling information on nuclear submarines and missile warning systems to a British company that prosecutors said was a C.I.A. front. He said at his trial that he could not be convicted of espionage because he did not have access to state secrets.
The authorities have pressed Mr. Sutyagin to sign a confession, but he has refused. As part of the deal for his release, he signed one this week, but his lawyer said Wednesday that he Vibram Five Fingers did so only because he was under duress.
“This is what worries him most, that people will start to think, ‘They traded him for spies, so he must be a spy,’ ” the lawyer, Anna Stavitskaya, said in a radio interview. “He never admitted his guilt, and he doesn’t consider his conviction legal.”
She said a Russian passport was given to him at the prison in Moscow, and he was told he would soon be flown to Vienna and then London. She said he had not been allowed to shave, out of concern that he might commit suicide.
Mr. Sutyagin, who was arrested in 1999, was one of the most prominent in a series of academics who were put on trial in Russia for spying. The academics’ defenders called the charges fraudulent, saying that the F.S.B., the main successor to the K.G.B., was trying to reassert itself under Mr. Putin by creating a spy mania.
The arrests were seen as a warning signal from the security services that working with foreigners was dangerous.
Mr. Sutyagin was convicted in 2004 after many procedural twists. The first court that heard the case dismissed the charges as too vague. When it went back to court, his Discount Vibram Five Fingers closed-door trial was disrupted midway when the judge and jury were replaced without explanation.
A new judge with a record of handling other accusations brought by the F.S.B. was assigned and refused to allow Mr. Sutyagin’s lawyers to present expert testimony showing that the information he handled was not secret.

Mozilla overhauls UI for Firefox 4 beta
July 7th, 2010 by jiayou1224Computerworld – Mozilla on Tuesday released the first beta of Firefox 4, a major upgrade expected later this year that features a revamped interface, support for a wide range of Web technologies and performance increases.
Firefox 4 Beta 1, which missed its original end-of-June ship date by less than a week, is available for MBT Tembea Windows, Mac and Linux, although the most obvious changes — the reworked interface — is only offered automatically to Windows users.
“We moved the tabs to the top to make it easier to focus on the Web content and easier to control the tools in your Web browser,” said Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox, in an introductory message on the Mozilla blog. “Also, if you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista, the menu bar was replaced with a single Firefox button so you can get to the most-used options with just one click.”
The tabs-on-top look is present by default only in the Windows version of Firefox 4. Mac and Linux users can switch on the UI feature from the View menu by selecting Toolbars and then Tabs on Top.
Mozilla has been talking about and working on a visual refresh for Firefox since November 2009, when it said it would borrow elements from both Microsoft’s Windows 7 and Google’s Chrome browser.
The similarities between Firefox 4 and Chrome are hard to miss: Both put the tabs above the address bar; both sport a minimalist look with few buttons; and on Vista and Windows 7, both dispense with the traditional menus spread across the top of the screen.
Firefox has gone one better than Chrome on that last element, for a single button – marked MBT Casual Men’s “Firefox” — displays a drop-down menu when clicked. Chrome uses two buttons for the same result.
All editions of Firefox 4 include a new crash protection feature, called “out of process plug-in” or OOPP for short. OOPP, designed to protect the browser from crashes by Adobe’s Flash, Apple’s QuickTime or Microsoft’s Silverlight, debuted in the Windows version of Firefox 3.6.4, but until Firefox 4 Beta 1, wasn’t available to Mac or Linux users.
Also under the hood are multiple performance improvements and standards support additions. The browser boasts a new HTML5 parser; native support for the WebM video standard that Google introduced two months ago; and unspecified performance gains that Beltzner said were just the beginning for Firefox 4.
Some of the features expected to make the final version are already tucked into the browser but have been turned off by default. Among them are support for WebGL and hardware acceleration based on Windows Vista’s and Windows 7’s Direct2D, the same API (application programming interface) Microsoft uses to speed up Internet Explorer 9.
Mozilla has set an aggressive schedule for Firefox 4. In May, Beltzner said the company was shooting for a final by the end of November, with a solid release candidate in mid-October. Tuesday, he told users to expect beta updates every two to cheap Jordan Shoes three weeks.
Firefox accounts for approximately 23.8% of all browsers in use, according to the most recent data from Web metrics company Net Applications. The browser peaked last November at 24.7%. In the same seven months, Google’s Chrome nearly doubling its usage share, going from 3.9% to 7.2%.
Firefox 4 Beta 1 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac and Linux from Mozilla’s site. At the moment, only an English-language version is available.

All eyes on Tiger at Irish golf celebrity pro-am
July 5th, 2010 by jiayou1224ADARE, Ireland — Tiger Woods will headline an Irish charity tournament this week, though it could be his last with the No. 1 ranking.
Woods is preparing for Michael Jordan Shoes next week’s British Open at St. Andrews and could lose the top ranking for the first time in five years before then.
Rival Phil Mickelson, ranked No. 2, missed a chance at the U.S. Open to move up the rankings. He’ll get another opportunity at the PGA-ranked Scottish Open this weekend at Loch Lomond. Woods is skipping that event.
Instead Woods will play in the J.P. McManus Invitational Pro-Am, a two-day event in Adare that starts Monday.
Woods flew overnight by private jet to make his afternoon tee time in Ireland.
Every five years, Irish Jordan Foamposite Lite horse racing billionaire McManus brings together mixed groups of pros, Irish business leaders and Hollywood celebrities for an event expected to raise more than $37 million for dozens of Irish charities.
This year’s celebrity golfers include actors Michael Douglas, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Aidan Quinn, Kyle MacLachlan and Peter Gallagher; English Premier League football coaches Harry Redknapp and Martin O’Neill; and Irish boy band Westlife.
Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, who won the last McManus trophy in 2005, said he expected Woods to rebound quickly at St. Andrews, where Woods won two of his three British Opens in 2000 and 2005.
“There’s no doubt, any time Tiger hits form at all, he’s comfortably the favorite to win any of the majors,” said Harrington, who also was teeing off Monday at Adare. “St. Andrews sets up very well for him.”
Like Woods, Harrington’s skipping the Scottish Open but plans to head straight to St. Andrews by Friday for at least two weekend practice runs.
“He spins the ball very well,” Harrington said of Woods. “He’s the No. 1 player at getting the ball to finish where it lands. St. Andrews requires that so much because of the firmness of the greens. So I wouldn’t write him off, that’s for sure.”
Harrington, who has Air Max Shoes struggled since winning three majors in 2007-08, said St. Andrews would become “a lottery” if winds gust throughout the four-day event July 15-18.
“The greens are firmer than any we’ll play for the rest of the year, and the pin positions are exceptionally tight, so you’ve got to hit the ball into the greens very high,” he said. “Obviously if it’s very windy, that’s not so easy to go. It becomes guesswork if you have to throw the ball up in the air into a strong wind.”

India Rupee Gains As China’s Yuan Move Fuels Risk Appetite; Bonds Down
June 21st, 2010 by jiayou1224MUMBAI (Dow Jones)–The Indian rupee Monday rose to its highest level against the U.S. dollar in a month, in line with other Asian peers as China’s decision to ease the yuan’s peg to the greenback MBT Shoes boosted local stocks and encouraged investors to buy currencies perceived riskier.
The dollar was at INR45.76 in late trade, down from INR46.17 in late Friday trade. This was the dollar’s lowest level since May 18, when it touched INR45.51.
Currencies across Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea gained after the People’s Bank of China said Saturday it would allow the yuan to gradually rise against the dollar. Beijing had pegged the yuan at CNY6.83 to a dollar since July 2008 to protect its export sector amid the global financial crisis.
China’s decision buoyed stock markets across Asia, with the Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensitive Index rising 1.7% to close at 17,876.55.
While the central banks in South Korea and Thailand are suspected to have intervened to cap their currencies’ gains, the Reserve Bank of India stayed away from the market.
“The RBI’s absence from the foreign exchange market may also make the rupee particularly well placed to gain from the Vibram Five Fingers yuan de-pegging,” Standard Chartered Bank said in a report.
“Given that the USD/INR (pair) is likely to convincingly breach INR46.00, the market will now focus on the 100-day moving average, which is at 45.70,” it added.
Top Indian policy makers said it is too early to judge the impact of China’s currency move on the rupee.
“What happens to the exchange rate, we are evaluating the impact and that in turn will have an impact on trade and capital flows. So I think we have got to wait for some time and see how this plays out,” RBI Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn said.
Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla said the government will “wait and watch” the impact of the currency move on the economy. China is one of India’s largest trading partners, enjoying a $15.2 billion trade surplus during April-December 2009, according to latest data.
In the bond market, government bonds ended mixed as strong demand for funds to pay for Internet bandwidth licenses strained liquidity.
The benchmark 7.80% 2020 bond closed at INR101.58, down from INR101.64 at Friday’s close. However, the second-most traded 8.20% 2022 bond finished higher at INR102.00 from INR101.81 at last close.
The market didn’t draw any comfort from Gokarn’s comments that the central bank could consider additional Air Jordan measures to ease liquidity.
“What I want to emphasise is that this (tight liquidity) is temporary. This is money that is accruing in government accounts, which will be spent, which will find its way back into the system. (It is) not a permanent structural change in the system,” he said.

Jason Arnott: I’ve been wanting to come back to the Devils for a while
June 20th, 2010 by jiayou1224When the Nashville Predators lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs this spring to the Chicago Blackhawks, captain Jason Arnott met with general manager David Poile about the Air Jordan 7 ossibility of a contract extension.
Arnott has one year remaining at $4.5 million on his five-year deal with the Predators.
“David and I had a meeting at the end of the year,” Arnott said today. “We talked about an extension. With the economics and our ownership, it just wasn’t feasible for him to give me an extension. He didn’t know if he’d be able to give me one at the end of (the contract).
“I either wanted an extension or I wanted to start fresh with a new team. He wanted to go a lot younger, so we came to an agreement that it was time for me to move on. I gave him a short list of a few teams that I would love to be a part of and New Jersey was No. 1. It ended up that that was the team that traded for me and I’m thrilled with that.”
How thrilled? Remember, Arnott was the center for the Devils’ A Line with Patrik Elias and Petr Sykora. They made magic together.
And it was Arnott who took a pass from Elias in the second overtime in Dallas on the night of June 10, 2000, to score the Air Jordan 8 up-clinching goal for the Devils.
“I’ve been wanting to come back there for a while now,” Arnott said.
He is 35 years old now and the game has changed in the NHL. But, with Travis Zajac, Arnott gives the Devils two top centers. And it allows them to move Elias back to left wing, perhaps with Arnott.
Elias left a message for Arnott when he heard of the trade.
“I told him he’d better start working out,” Elias said. “He’s probably forgotten how quick I am.”
Arnott laughed.
“I think he forgot I was the brains of the line,” he said. “I had to keep those two Czechs in line.”
Sykora’s NHL career seems to be over, but Arnott feels he can help a Devils team he considers capable of Air Jordan 9 inning another Cup.
“I think their forwards speak for themselves,” he said. “They’ve got a superstar player in Zach Parise. I think Patty (Elias) can still play at an elite level. With their core players, as well as their role players, it’s a good mix.
Sykora’s NHL career seems to be over, but Arnott feels he can help a Devils team he considers capable of winning another Cup.
“I think their forwards speak for themselves,” he said. “They’ve got a superstar player in Zach Parise. I think Patty (Elias) can still play at an elite level. With their core players, as well as their role players, it’s a good mix.
“It’s tough to see their defense right now because I think they have to re-sign a few guys. You always have Marty (Brodeur) in net and he’s world class goaltender. It’s a team that didn’t do well in the playoffs but certainly did well in the regular season and just came up short in the playoffs. They’re a very explosive team.”
He’s watched the Devils lose in the first round of the playoffs the last three years and fail to get past the second round since 2003.
“It was the same Air Jordan 10 ituation when I came in the first time,” he said of the Jan. 4, 1998, trade with the Edmonton Oilers that brought Arnott and Bryan Muir to the Devils for Bill Guerin and Valeri Zelepukin. “It’s a matter of getting that monkey off their back and getting out of the first round.
“I can still remember finishing at the top of the division or conference and being put out in the first round two years in a row (1998 and ‘99). And then we went on to win it.”
I asked Arnott if he thought Lamoriello might look to bring Sykora back. He laughed.
“I don’t know. I’m just happy to be back,” he said. “I’d love to play with Patty (Elias) again. That’s going to be up to Johnny Mac. I’m sure we’ll have those discussions on that.
“Just to be back with the organization and to be back playing with Patty again was one of the things I wanted to do before I ended my career. Now I have the opportunity.”
Where is he at this stage of his career?
“I think I’m a lot smarter,” Arnott said. “I’m more aware, more experienced. The game has obviously changed quite a bit since I’ve been there. You’ve got to be a lot smarter on the ice defensively and offensively. You have to be able to skate and do the little things right without taking penalties.
“I expect to go out and score a lot of goals and help offensively. But defensively as well. It’s a big part of Air Jordan 11 e game now. You have to play defensively and keep the puck out of your own net. That’s what wins championships.”
Arnott was limited to 63 games this past season.
“I hurt my shoulder at the beginning of the year. That wasn’t real serious,” he said. “I hurt my head near the end of the season and I took a little more time off because I wanted to rest up for the playoffs. We were already in the playoffs so I didn’t want to rush back. No major concerns.”
The Cup-clinching goal in 2000 remains the pinnacle of his career.
“I watch that video probably two or three times a summer every summer since it happened,” he said. “I still get a tear in my eye when I see it. It was the best time of my life. I’ll never forget it. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to come back. I had such a great experience there and it’s an organization that wants to win all the time. You don’t get too many organizations like that.
“In the playoffs anything can Air Jordan 12 appen. The Devils went into overtime a few times (in recent playoffs) and it just didn’t go their way. If it had gone their way they may have gone on to win or gone to the finals. It’s a fine line in the playoffs. I’ve been on both sides. I guess I can bring my experience in that area.”

Israeli forces board Gaza aid ship the Rachel Corrie
June 5th, 2010 by jiayou1224Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country’s forces took control of the Gaza-bound aid ship Rachel Corrie without resistance.
The military said its forces boarded the 1,200-ton Rachel Corrie cargo ship from the sea, not helicopters.
The takeover NFL Super Bowl stood in marked contrast to a violent confrontation at sea earlier this week when Israeli commandos blocked a Turkish aid vessel trying to break the blockade.
On Monday, Israeli commandos abseiled onto the deck from helicopters and a clash with passengers left nine pro-Palestinian activists dead.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying: “Forces used the same procedures for Monday’s flotilla and Saturday’s sailing but was met by a different response.
“On today’s ship and in five of the six vessels in the previous flotilla, (their boarding) procedure ended without casualties. The only difference was with one ship where extremist Islamic activists, supporters of terrorism, waited for our troops on the deck with axes and knives.”
Army spokeswoman Lt Col. Avital Leibovich said Saturday’s takeover took only a few minutes and that the vessel was being taken to Israel’s Ashdod port.
Israel said that the Irish-owned aid ship was warned not to approach Gaza.
The Rachel Corrie, which is carrying a small group of activists including a Nobel NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers laureate, was trying to deliver aid as well as breach a three-year-old blockade that has plunged the territory’s 1.5 million residents deeper into poverty.
But it has stood by the blockade, which it says is needed to prevent the Islamic militant group Hamas from getting weapons.
“Israel will continue to exercise its right to self defence. We will not allow the establishment of an Iranian port in Gaza,” Netanyahu’s statement added.

Yankees Find Stride, With a Few Adjustments
May 29th, 2010 by jiayou1224The Yankees’ favorable schedule, with 13 of 16 games against the three worst teams in baseball, gives them a chance to fatten their victory total and improve their standing in the American League East. That is one way to look at it. Here is another view, courtesy of General Manager Brian Cashman:
“I cringe. The way we’re playing right now, we’re a team you want to play.”
Want may be too strong a NFL New York Jets word, at least after the Yankees thrashed one of those cellar dwellers, the Cleveland Indians, 8-2, on Friday night at Yankee Stadium. Hardly any team looks forward to facing the Yankees when they are staggering because they are capable of erupting at any time.
Phil Hughes pitched seven sturdy innings, and Robinson Cano went 3 for 4 to pace a 12-hit barrage that also included a two-run homer by Nick Swisher that clanged high off the right-field foul pole. Cano’s seventh-inning grand slam scored Curtis Granderson, who showed no ill effects from the left groin injury that sidelined him for the last month.
“A good day across the board,” said Granderson, who went 1 for 3 with a walk.
Granderson said he was eager to see how his body responds Saturday after playing a full nine innings, especially with a day game scheduled. He expects to be in the lineup again, and the Yankees are glad to have him. Heading into Friday, the Yankees were NFL Oakland Raiders tied with San Diego for the second-best record in baseball, but they had scored only 15 runs in their previous six games.
With the team arriving from Minnesota after 4 a.m. Friday, Manager Joe Girardi resisted the temptation to stray from his original plan of resting his cleanup hitter, Alex Rodriguez, and his catcher, Francisco Cervelli. Cano slid into the cleanup spot for the first time in his career, and his final hit landed in the second deck in right field, a rocket that turned a close game into a rout and earned him a curtain call from the crowd of 44,634.
“It’s always good to taste what it feels to be a cleanup hitter,” Cano said.
Granderson received a similar reaction during the first inning from the bleacher creatures, who had not seen him patrolling center field since May 1. In his absence, the Yankees went 13-11, playing more games without him than with him. From his vantage point, Granderson said he thought that the Yankees (29-19) happened to play several hot teams — Detroit, Boston, Tampa Bay — and that his presence might not have meant much.
But his injury, as well as those to Nick Johnson and Jorge Posada, thrust reserves into expanded roles and forced Girardi to tinker with the bottom of the lineup. Granderson regularly batted seventh before he was hurt, but he hit second Friday, and Girardi suggested he would continue to hit there against right-handed pitching until Posada returns.
For their corresponding roster NFL Philadelphia Eagles move, the Yankees preferred flexibility over experience. They designated the veteran outfielder Randy Winn for assignment and kept the rookie utility player Kevin Russo, whose ability to play five positions gives Girardi options. Girardi seemed to be leaning toward Russo this week, starting him in left field the previous four games, and Winn, after hitting .213 in 29 games, said he was hardly shocked that the Yankees discarded him.
Less surprising was that Hughes reappeared as a force Friday, rebounding after two shaky outings to strike out eight while allowing two runs. He had been throwing the wrong kind of strikes — splitting the plate, not grazing the corners — and, as a result, struggling to finish off hitters: all nine runs he allowed in those starts were scored with two outs. His second pitch Friday, a fastball to Trevor Crowe, caught the outside edge for strike two, and Hughes put him away with a curveball, beginning a NFL Pittsburgh Steelers run of five consecutive strikeouts that flaunted the breadth of his repertory: curve, fastball, fastball, curve, cutter.
